Zoo Osnabrueck Plans to Open New Bat Cave in 2017
Germany’s Zoo Osnabrueck plans to add a bat cave with leaf-nosed bats to its subterranean zoo area, which is scheduled to open by summer 2017 – construction works will begin by the end of this month. 15 animals are expected to habitat the 29 square meter large enclosure, which is constructed to meet the particular needs of this bat species. A fog producing machine will be installed in addition to fully impregnated floors and walls to achieve a higher rate of humidity of about 75 percent. Furthermore, the bat cave will feature heat lamps.
The total costs for this project amount to approx. 23,000 Euros – the zoo will generate 13,000 Euros itself. The remaining sum will be financed by the VR foundation of the bank group Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken Norddeutschland. Andreas Busemann, Managing Director of Zoo Osnabrueck, is thankful for the support: “Such foundations are very important for the zoo, as we finance ourself almost exclusively through entrance fees, sponsorships and donations. Without any additional support, we would not be able to realize construction projects. In our subterranean zoo area we bring visitors closer to the often forgotten ‘ground’ habitat – we also created a connection to the neighboring museum, which also takes up this topic. With the new bat cave, we will again draw attention on the topic of habitat protection,” said Busemann. Guests will be able to observe the bats through bright glass walls – by feeding times and additional lighting, the nocturnal animals will also be seen in daylight. (eap)
