Netherlands: It’s Getting Floral in Almere – Update on Floriade 2022

Under the motto of “Growing Green Cities”, the Floriade 2022 will kick off in the Dutch city of Almere on 14 April this year. “The Arboretum has been completed. This permanent green space forms the green cornerstone of the Expo and the Hortus district that will subsequently be built on the site. It is an alphabetically arranged library of trees and plants that our guests will soon be able to literally walk through. What makes this Arboretum special is that all the trees and plants contribute to a healthy, green city. The construction of the green district and the design of the Expo go hand in hand, which makes this project even more interesting,” explains Floriade Managing Director Hans Bakker.

For the total exhibition period of six months, visitors to the garden expo, which only takes place every ten years, can look forward to individual concepts for a sustainable and green future from 40 different nations. The German contribution, for example, is dedicated to the ever-growing fusion of architecture and horticulture or city and nature. “We are pleased that the German Garden is gradually becoming more and more a reality. The first basic construction work was successfully completed, and we are in the actual building construction phase. In parallel, the production of the exhibition contents and the first preparatory work for the horticulture are taking place,” says Christiane Krüger, Director of the German Garden. Another special experience is planned to be the “Art Pavilion Flevoland” (Studio Ossidiana), where visitors will be able to experience a fusion of architecture, art and nature. (eap)
