Germany: New Port des Lumières Digital Art Center to Be Opened at Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier
Following the announcement late last year of a digital teamLab museum for the new Elbbrückenquartier in the eastern part of Hamburg’s HafenCity, a further digital art center has now been announced for the Überseequartier being built in the southern part of HafenCity in the form of Port des Lumières, which is intended to also complement the cultural and entertainment offerings of the inner-city urban development project in the future. This was jointly announced today by French shopping mall operator Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) and Paris-based company Culturespaces. The digital exhibition offering will be located in the new mixed-use complex Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, which will house retail, entertainment concepts and over 40 restaurant units fine-tuned with a total of around 600 apartments, offices for 4,000 workplaces, three hotels and a cruise terminal.
In addition to the famous L’Atelier des Lumières in Paris (cf. EAP 3/2020) and other immersive digital art centers in Jeju Island, Bordeaux, Baux-de-Provence and Dubai, the operating company Culturespaces is currently planning further locations in Amsterdam, Seoul and New York. The Culturespaces concept, which uses state-of-the-art technology to bring the masterpieces of artists such as Cézanne, van Gogh, Klimt and Kandinsky into three-dimensional digital space, always pays homage to the respective location. The offer is not only aimed at art enthusiasts, but is also intended to appeal to a broader target group of all ages thanks to its high entertainment and experience factor.
“[…] With Port des Lumières, Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier sharpens its profile as an experience-oriented flagship destination, and Hamburg in turn gains a new highlight with international appeal as a city of art and culture. We are very pleased about the partnership with Culturespaces and the premiere in Germany with Port des Lumières,” says Andreas Hohlmann, Managing Director Austria & Germany, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield.
