Câble C1: Greater Paris to Get a Cable Car in 2025
(eap) With sights and attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and Disneyland Paris, the French capital is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting many millions of visitors year after year. From 2025, locals and tourists will be able to use the first urban cable car in the Paris metropolitan area as an alternative to other means of public transport. Under the name “Câble C1”, an urban ropeway with five stations is being built over a total distance of 4.5 kilometers. The client is the transport authority Île-de-France Mobilités, which is financing the project (49 percent) together with the state (21 percent) and the Conseil départemental du Val de Marne (30 percent). The project volume is estimated at 132 million euros.
The Vorarlberg company Doppelmayr was commissioned to build the city ropeway. The 105 cabins are custom-made and barrier-free so that they can accommodate up to ten passengers – including those with limited mobility, baby carriages, bicycles, etc. The new ropeway is designed to transport up to 1,600 passengers per hour and direction. Simple materials and green roofs in the architecture of the cabins are intended to ensure that they blend in as well as possible with their surroundings. As part of a public survey in spring 2022, the population of the Île-de-France region was able to help select the external appearance of the cabins. Construction work began in September 2022.
The Câble C1 will be the first aerial ropeway in the Île-de-France region, linking the suburbs of Créteil and Villeneuve-Saint-Georges via the municipalities of Valenton and Limeil-Brévannes. The scheduled travel time from the starting terminal in Créteil to the terminus in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges will be 18 minutes. ■
