Germany: New Home for Spreewelten Waterpark’s Penguins

Tierpflegerin Laura Schäfer nimmt Abschied

Last week, ten young Humboldt penguins left the Lübbenau-based Spreewelten waterpark’s penguin enclosure. An animal transporter brought the six male and four female penguins to the Nature Resource Network located in the Czech Republic. The network is responsible for allocating animals a new home at zoos, animal and leisure parks. From here, the young penguins will soon travel to Antalya, Turkey, where a new hotel featuring a large leisure complex, which also includes a penguin enclosure, is currently under construction. “Our ten young animals will be the first penguins at the facility, which will offer them a completely new home,” Laura Schäfer, animal keeper at Spreewelten, explains.

Due to limited capacity at the penguin enclosure, Spreewelten could not keep all of their young animals. The remaining 17 penguins are currently in their mating season and will soon lay the first eggs into their nests – the fledglings will hatch some 40 days later. Some of the water park’s young penguins that were born in the last two years today live in Philadelphia, USA and South Korea.

Currently, the Spreewelten waterpark is working on the expansion of its facility. Read more about the novelties planned for the near future in one of our next EAP magazine issues. (eap)
