Plans for the Subsequent Use of Sea Life Königswinter are Progressing

Wo einst verschiedenste Unterwasserbewohner bestaunt werden konnten, könnte schon bald ein neues Erlebniszentrum der Explorado Group entstehen.

(eap) The Königswinter city council has proposed a new operator for the former Sea Life building. The Explorado Group, which is known for its exhibitions at the Odysseum in Cologne and its adventure museum at the Happy Franky leisure centre in Troisdorf, is planning an adventure world with interactive and educational elements in Königswinter, which will also make use of audio-visual technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR).

If local political approval is granted, the project is set to start this year. “We are very happy with the result! The experience world will be an enrichment for Königswinter and the region as a tourist location. We are creating a new attraction for Königswinter and another reason to visit the city. We will present this proposal to politicians,” explains Mayor Lutz Wagner.

Following the closure of Sea Life (Merlin Entertainments) in 2023, the city of Königswinter took over the building and explored possibilities of usage. As an interim solution, temporary exhibitions and events were initially held. In an expression of interest process, the city examined the possible uses of the former Sea Life building and ultimately chose the Explorado Group’s concept from three proposals, as they state.

“The choice of Königswinter as a location is appealing to the Explorado Group for many reasons. The region uniquely combines a picturesque landscape with proximity to the impressive Siebengebirge mountains, which creates an inspiring cultural environment. In addition, the historical significance of the location and its enduring tourist appeal provide an excellent basis for innovative projects. I personally know and like the region very much, as I have visited it very often with my children. I see immense potential here to present both educational and entertaining content in a special context and thus inspire a broad and diverse audience,” emphasizes Andreas Waschk, CEO of Explorado Group. ■
