Singapore: Multi-Billion US Dollar Expansion Announced for Resorts World Sentosa

The leisure and hotel resort complex Resorts World Sentosa (RWS), which belongs to Genting Group's portfolio and was inaugurated 2010 on Singapore’s Sentosa Island, is set to be expanded during the next years for a total investment volume of 4.5 billion US Dollar (approx. four billion Euro) by around 164,000 square meters, which is around half of the size of its current gross floor area. Plans include a line-up of new attractions at the complex’ Universal Studios Singapore theme park and the S.E.A. Aquarium as well as new entertainment and lifestyle offerings such as new shops, restaurants and shows. This major expansion is to be delivered in phases with new experiences opening every year from 2020 to a projected completion around 2025.
Universal Studios Singapore is set to receive two new theme areas, “Super Nintendo World” and “Minion Park”, the latter of which will replace the existing “Madagascar” area and feature a motion simulator thrill-ride attraction as highlight. Located nearby the theme park, the S.E.A. Aquarium will be expanded to more than three times its present size by taking over the adjacent Maritime Experiential Museum. It will be redesigned and subdivided into three zones, which will be “Evolution & Extinction”, “Exploration & Deep Ocean” and “Conservation”. Also, the aquarium is proposed to be rebranded as Singapore Oceanarium.
Alongside the waterside promenade, a new “Waterfront Lifestyle Complex” is set to be developed helmed by two new destination hotels, new dining facilities and lifestyle activities. The existing “Resorts World Theater” will be replaced by an “Adventure Dining Playhouse” for fun dining experiences. Last but not least, a new driverless transport system will provide connectivity between the mainland and Sentosa. According to its own statement, RWS welcomes over 20 million visitors per year, both locals and tourists, accounting for more than one-third of all international visitor arrivals into Singapore.
