Spain: Barcelona Zoo to Renew and Expand Animal Enclosures
In spring 2014, Parque Zoológico de Barcelona presented its latest expansion plans to the public, which were to be carried out as part of the zoo’s strategy plan 2012-2020. Having realized a larger outdoor area for hippos and a new enclosure for the African elephants, the zoo started with the extension of the Sahel Savannah area in the middle of last year, where elephants, giraffes and lions will be accommodated. A new orangutan facility of 1,000 square meters will also be built. A total investment of 7.4 million euros are being spent on the two expansion projects. The Spanish company Amusement Logic, specialized in design, planning, development and project management, was commissioned for the theming execution of the new elephant, giraffe and lion area. Opened in 1892 and located in the Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona, Barcelona Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Spain. (eap)
