Swimming Pool Safety: Cologne Stadium Pool Relies on AI
(eap) More and more public pool operators are also using artificial intelligence (AI) to increase the safety of pool users. This includes KölnBäder, who recently started using an AI-supported drowning detection system from the software company Lynxight in the indoor pool of the Stadionbad in Cologne, Germany.
“With this technology, we are sending a strong signal for safety in our pools. The system is not only an important step towards digitalisation, but also a clear commitment to the continuous improvement of our safety standards. The investment volume for the introduction of this system for Stadionbad is some 50,000 euros, and it shows our clear commitment to modernisation,” explains Claudia Heckmann, Managing Director of KölnBäder.
The Lynxight system works with cameras that are focussed exclusively on the water areas of the pools. In the Stadionbad, five cameras monitor the sports pool and three cameras monitor the teaching pool. The drowning detection system continuously analyses the movement behaviour of swimmers in real time and recognises signs of potential distress. The aim is to identify the danger and alert staff within 30 seconds.
To this end, each shift is equipped with smartwatches for up to three staff that are directly connected to the system. In the event of a potential emergency, the supervisor is alerted via visual, acoustic and haptic signals. The smartwatch shows the layout of the pool and the approximate position of the person concerned.
Markus Sterzl, Managing Director at KölnBäder, emphasises that the AI does not replace staff: “The AI-supported technology provides important support for our water supervision. It recognises movement patterns and helps us to react more quickly. However, Lynxight in no way replaces our qualified staff – it complements them in a meaningful way.”
With regard to data protection, it is emphasised that the video data recorded is only stored locally and is automatically and irrevocably deleted after 60 seconds. There is no facial recognition, and KölnBäder has no access to any stored images. In addition, the system, which is also used in other pools in Germany, complies with the guidelines of the Association of Public Pools.
