USA: San Diego Chosen as Location for Second Sesame Street Theme Park
Two years ago the Sesame Workshop non-profit organization and SeaWorld Entertainment operating group announced their plans to build a new, second theme park dedicated to the “Sesame Street” brand, following the announcement of the two parties to continue their partnership through December 2031 (cf. EAP News of 23rd May 2017). The location for the second park was subject to market research and has now been chosen: In 2021, the second Sesame Place® theme park will open its doors in San Diego, CA. After the opening of the first Sesame Street theme park in Longhorne (near Philadelphia, PA) almost 40 years ago, the US West Coast will now also get a theme park dedicated to the beloved characters from the preschool series.
“As we celebrate Sesame Street’s 50th anniversary, we are excited to share the news of a major opportunity for kids and families to connect with and learn from the brand and its beloved characters […],” says Steve Youngwood, President, Media & Education and Chief Operating Officer, Sesame Workshop.
Marc Swanson, Interim CEO of SeaWorld Entertainment, adds, “We share Sesame Workshop’s goal of educating and entertaining generations of children, and the opening of a second park, the only one of its kind on the West Coast, furthers our company mission to provide guests with extraordinary experiences. We are thrilled to be able to grow the presence of Sesame Place theme parks in the United States, and San Diego is the perfect complement to our Philadelphia location.” (eap)
