USA: Six Flags and Samsung Announce Renewed Collaboration on Virtual Reality Coasters
Six Flags Entertainment Corporation and Samsung Electronics America recently announced their renewed collaboration on developing new virtual reality (VR) coaster experiences after having already equipped nine rollercoasters with Samsung’s “Gear VR” technology powered by Oculus last year (c.f. EAP news from March 7th, 2016).
The companies presented the new “Galactic Attack” mixed reality experience: After riders have taken their seats in the carriages, they are introduced to their headset’s “passthrough camera”, which enables them to see a part of the real world as well (their own carriage and the person sitting next to them) along with virtual content. A heads up display overlay on the passthrough camera view will show data like current status of weaponry, time codes, fuel cells and a countdown clock. As riders drop down the lifthill at high speeds, the mixed reality view changes to a completely immersive, virtual reality environment. The new experience is based on the same content offered on the existing VR rides at Six Flags parks, immersing guests into a battle against aliens. The first two “Galactic Attack” experiences recently opened at Six Flags Magic Mountain (“The New Revolution”) and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (“Kong”).
In our upcoming EAP issue we present you, dear readers, more exciting VR attractions that you should try out! (eap)
