(eap) Last week, the construction of a new urban ropeway with a length of 8.4 kilometers and a transport capacity of 1,500 passengers per hour and direction started in Uruapan, Mexico. The Austrian company Doppelmayr has been commissioned with the construction, which is expected to take two years and will involve an investment of around three billion pesos (approx. 155 million euros). The ropeway will feature six stations, 50 supports and 94 cabins and, with a ticket price of 10 pesos (approx. 0.52 euros), will transport passengers by means of clean energy in 29 minutes along Mexico’s longest ropeway route.

“Projects like this have a positive social impact as they not only offer fast, safe and fully accessible transportation to everyone but also boost local economy around the stations. With the development of this new ropeway we take a big step towards the transformation of public transportation to increase sustainability in Uruapan,” emphasizes Konstantinos Panagiotou, CEO of Doppelmayr Mexico.

In addition, another Doppelmayr ropeway is currently under construction in Mexico City. The “Línea 3” will also comprise six stations and, in its initial version, will transport 1,000 passengers per hour and direction over a length of 5.5 kilometres to their destination in around 21 minutes. The new ropeway will be equipped with 71 detachable cabins of the “D-Line generation”. ■
