Germany: Visitors to Hannover Adventure Zoo Discover New “Afi Mountain“ Area
Germany’s Hannover Adventure Zoo today opens its new “Afi Mountain” theme area featuring a “Drill forest” and a walk-in aviary, which replaces the old wading bird enclosure and connects the existing “Gorilla Mountain” with the “Kibongo” chimpanzees’ enclosure (cp. Zoo News in EAP, 5/16). The new area is now home to the threatened Drill species and provides visitors with information on Afi Mountain national park in Nigeria – the area features edutainment stations, photo exhibits, impressive African masks and a film. “The large and small panoramic glass panes let the boundaries between the guests and the animals blur, so standing in the rock cave makes you feel like standing directly amid the apes. It is a continuous shift between observing and being observed, no matter if through rock cracks or deep in the green rain forest,” describes Andreas M. Casdorff, CEO of Hannover Adventure Zoo, the new visitor experience. The opening of Afi Mountain marks another milestone of the zoo’s masterplan 2025+.
