Groundbreaking for the New Westbad Public Pool in Bremen

Innensenator Ulrich Mäurer, Uwe Siefke (technischer Leiter Bremer Bäder GmbH); Architekt Udo Janßen, Frank Fischer (Kaufmännischer Leiter Bremer Bäder) (v.l.n.r.) setzten gemeinsam den symbolischen ersten Stein für den Bau des neuen Westbads.

(eap) On January 1 last year, the citizens of Bremen (Germany) said goodbye to the old Westbad public pool in Bremen’s Walle district after almost 50 years. Last Friday, June 7, a milestone in the new pool construction project of the Bremer Bäder (municipal pool management group) was celebrated: the laying of the foundation stone for the new Westbad.

Around 25 million euros are being invested in the construction of the new combined pool, which is to be built over the next 2.5 years. The new Westbad will meet modern requirements and will be designed according to the latest energy standards. It will have a sports pool with a lifting floor (6 x 25 meter) and diving platform (1 meter and 3 meter), two training pools, a teaching pool and a separate 160 square meter parent-child area. Also, there will be a gastronomy, which will be accessible from both inside and outside. The outdoor area, including the parking lot, will also be redesigned.

Sports Senator Ulrich Mäurer emphasized the importance of the new Westbad for the city of Bremen: “With this new building, we are successfully continuing the pool concept of Bremer Bädergesellschaft. This project is an important contribution to the promotion of sports and recreation in Bremen. It will be a place that brings athletes, families and people of all ages together and contributes to health and quality of life in our city.”

“We are looking forward to a modern and versatile swimming pool that meets all requirements and hope for a smooth construction phase so that the new Westbad can open its doors soon,” adds Daniel van Ballegoy, deputy head of the city’s sports department. ■
