(eap) In the spring of 2022, the Belgian Plopsa Group had presented its plans for the construction of a Plopsaqua water park in the Belgian city of Mechelen (Antwerp province) for the first time. The application for a required environmental permit was also submitted at that time. As it has now become known, the Plopsa Group had already withdrawn its initial application for an environmental permit in September last year in order to further complete the project dossier and take into account all possible objections. This week, the operating group, which already operates two Plopsaqua water parks in Belgium, submitted the revised application for an environmental permit for the swimming pool complex.

“After the withdrawal of our application for an environmental permit in September, we started to revise our dossier. Together with a number of internal and external experts, as well as our architect, we looked at the comments from the advisory bodies and the municipality’s environmental permit commission, including those relating to VLAREM (Editor’s note: Vlaams Reglement betreffende de Milieuvergunning, ENG: Implementing Regulation on the Flemish Environmental Permit Decree) and accessibility, and on this basis further refined our dossier,” explains interim CEO of the Plopsa Group, Koen Clement.

The future water park complex will involve an investment volume of 50 million euro and will replace the current Geerdegemvaart indoor swimming pool facility. In addition to a municipal area dedicated to club and school sports, the new complex will also feature an adventure pool area with various attractions for guests. The new Plopsaqua Mechelen Zennebad will be optimally integrated into the surrounding area and the transport network, making it accessible on foot and by bicycle as well as by bus and car. ■
