(eap) The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (AIA) has presented its final report in connection with the tragic fire at Liseberg’s Oceana water park on February 12, 2024. In this report, the commission states that the fire probably started in connection with the electrical sleeve welding of a diversion pipe in one of the outer waterslides. Safety recommendations for the parties involved in the water park project are now being derived from the accident.

“Liseberg has great confidence in the AIA’s work and their expertise, and we have done our outmost to assist them during the investigation. Liseberg takes the safety recommendations very seriously, and we are grateful for all observations that not only make us but the entire industry better,” explains Andreas Andersen, CEO of the Liseberg Group. “We all must learn from this incident. Otherwise, the fire becomes even more meaningless. And that is the real purpose of the report, to make us all – property-owners, contractors, and suppliers – better,” Andersen concludes.

According to Liseberg, the safety recommendations proposed by the Accident Investigation Authority in its final report have already been largely implemented. These include an update of internal control documents and manuals, increased monitoring of suppliers contracted by Liseberg, continued active participation in all safety rounds, construction, production and planning meetings at the construction site, as well as an additional third-party control of existing fire protection measures to identify reinforcing measures.

The investigation by the accident commission is intended to clarify what happened, why and how a similar incident can be avoided in the future. The question of liability is being dealt with by the public prosecutor’s office, whose investigations have not yet been completed. Meanwhile, work on the reconstruction of the Oceana water world continues to progress. The opening is planned for 2026. ■
